The short answer
To find your metformin ER cost without insurance, request the full cash price for the exact extended-release product, strength, and quantity on your prescription. Compare an eligible discount quote separately and include required fees. RxCompare does not publish live pharmacy prices; CMS NADAC figures describe pharmacy acquisition costs, not what you will pay.
Keep metformin ER and immediate-release quotes separate
Metformin is available in regular and extended-release forms. A price for immediate-release metformin does not answer a question about your ER prescription. Copy all release wording from your label instead of searching only for “metformin.”
Do not change release type, dose, or schedule because another listing looks cheaper. If an offer uses a product name or release description you do not recognize, ask the pharmacist whether it matches your prescription before using the quote.

Checking a metformin ER 500 mg price
For a prescription labeled metformin ER 500 mg, include “ER,” “500 mg,” and the actual tablet count in each request. The strength alone does not tell the pharmacy how much medication to quote. Use the prescribed strength if yours differs from this example.
- Full product name and release description from the label.
- Strength, dosage form, tablet quantity, and days supplied.
- Any brand or product requirement that the pharmacist needs to honor.
- The exact pharmacy location or delivery destination.
- Payment option: regular cash, a named discount offer, or your insurance.
Ask for the price you would actually pay
Check your current pharmacy and at least one alternative for the same fill. Record the quote date and whether the offer requires enrollment or a membership. Ask whether shipping and any dispensing charge are already included so you do not count them twice.
Use a pharmacy-confirmed total to decide. An online listing may use a default quantity or another product description. Confirm availability and delivery or pickup timing before starting a transfer.
Could you quote my exact metformin ER product, strength, and tablet count without insurance? Please give me the regular cash total and any eligible discount total separately, including required fees.
Compare 30-day and 90-day costs using days supplied
Ask whether your prescription permits the longer fill. Tablet count is not the same as days supplied: use the pharmacy’s stated supply length. For a 30-day quote, multiply the total including per-fill fees by three to compare it with a 90-day total.
For example, a hypothetical $12 fill plus $3 delivery every 30 days totals $45 over 90 days. A hypothetical $32 fill plus $3 delivery for 90 days totals $35. These are invented numbers illustrating arithmetic, not metformin prices or available offers. A larger fill also means paying more at one time.
If you have insurance, verify the exact covered product
For Marketplace coverage, HealthCare.gov recommends checking the plan’s covered-drug list and contacting the insurer about coverage. Ask about the precise metformin ER product on your prescription and the pharmacy you plan to use.
Get the insurance total separately from the cash or discount total, then ask your plan what an outside-insurance purchase would mean for your benefit. Do not assume the lowest price for one fill produces the lowest yearly cost.
Use the benchmark for context, not a retail estimate
Our metformin reference lists selected CMS descriptions, pricing units, record dates, and archived observations. It can help identify which description you are looking at, but it does not establish pharmacy inventory or a coupon price. Multiplying a per-unit NADAC value by your tablet quantity still does not produce a patient quote.
If a refill suddenly costs more, compare the new receipt with the old one before assuming the underlying medicine price increased. Check product, quantity, payment method, and fees.

Common questions
Is metformin ER always more expensive than immediate-release metformin?
This site cannot establish that from acquisition benchmarks. Get a quote for the product prescribed to you. Any change between immediate-release and extended-release products needs your prescriber or pharmacist’s guidance.
Does 90 tablets mean a 90-day supply?
Not necessarily. Days supplied depend on the prescription directions. Ask the pharmacist to confirm both quantity and days supplied before comparing totals.
Where can I find a current metformin ER coupon price?
Check a pharmacy or discount service for your exact product, strength, quantity, and location, then ask the pharmacy to confirm the total and eligibility. RxCompare does not issue coupons or guarantee an offer.
