The short answer

Start with CVS’s official transfer service or contact the CVS pharmacy you want to use. Have your current pharmacy and prescription details ready. Ask the receiving pharmacist to confirm eligibility, availability, your final price, and when the prescription will be ready. RxCompare cannot submit a transfer for you.

Start with the official CVS transfer process

CVS’s published instructions describe signing in, opening Pharmacy, and selecting Transfer Prescriptions. Enter the requested patient, current-pharmacy, and prescription details, then choose the CVS pickup location. You can request one prescription or several. Interface labels may change; use the official instructions below.

Prepare before you submit

Use this preparation checklist for your conversation with the receiving pharmacy. Keep the details on your prescription label or a private note; there is no reason to enter them on RxCompare.

  • Identify the exact prescription or prescriptions you want moved. A selective request is easier to check than a vague request to move everything.
  • Have the old pharmacy’s location and contact number available, together with your prescription label.
  • Write down when you need your next supply and how you prefer to receive it.
  • Choose the exact CVS location. Check the pharmacy counter’s hours, which may differ from the store’s hours.
  • Bring your insurance or discount information to the pharmacy so the quote uses your actual payment option.

Use the prescription-label checklist

Check the cost before changing pharmacies

Ask CVS for a quote for the same strength, dosage form, quantity, and days supplied as your current fill. Write down whether the quote uses insurance, a cash price, or a discount. A quoted amount is useful only when those details match.

For Medicare drug coverage, a preferred in-network pharmacy may have different cost sharing from another network pharmacy. Check your specific plan rather than assuming a familiar chain will have the same copay.

Separate a submitted request from a ready prescription

Keep the request confirmation for your records. Before making a trip, ask the selected pharmacy whether it has received the prescription, whether anything is still pending, and whether the fill is ready. Do not treat a website submission as a pickup promise.

If you need to change an online in-store refill request, CVS recommends contacting the selected store by phone. For a transfer problem, likewise ask the receiving location to identify the specific next action.

When to involve your prescriber

Ask the pharmacist whether the existing prescription can be used. If a new authorization is needed, give your prescriber the exact destination and explain the timing. Ask the pharmacy and prescriber to coordinate rather than submitting several overlapping requests.

Controlled-substance transfers have additional restrictions. A general online form does not establish eligibility; ask the pharmacist about your specific prescription and the applicable rules. If you may miss a dose, contact your pharmacist or prescriber promptly for medication-specific guidance.

Close the loop after the first fill

This is an independent checklist, not a CVS service or endorsement. Pharmacy procedures and individual eligibility can change. Confirm the details directly with CVS.

  • Confirm the final price and prescription details at pickup.
  • Check which prescriptions remain at the previous pharmacy.
  • Review automatic refills and any outstanding orders with each pharmacy.
  • Tell your prescriber where future prescriptions should be sent.

Common questions

Can I transfer from Walgreens to CVS?

Use CVS’s transfer process or contact the CVS location you want to use. Identify the current Walgreens location and ask the receiving pharmacist to check your prescription’s eligibility.

Does moving to CVS guarantee a lower price?

No. Compare actual quotes for the same fill and payment method, including fees. RxCompare does not have a live CVS retail-price feed.

Can I use this guide to move between two CVS locations?

This guide covers moving from another pharmacy to CVS. For an existing CVS prescription at another CVS location, contact the destination store about pickup or refill arrangements before submitting a new request.
